Two unrelated complaints arrive labeled the same way: the door that retreats the moment it meets the slab, and the head that hums along with nothing following it. A new unit is rarely the answer to either one.

Six boxes, about thirty seconds. You pick when to be called back, and that is when the phone rings.
Or call (925) 230-5528That reversal is the safety circuit doing its job, correctly or otherwise. Two photo eyes sit low on either jamb and have to see each other for travel to continue downward. A bin, a bag of soil, a bicycle wheel, a bracket nudged out of square, or a film of dust on a lens all break that line. Check the indicator on each eye before anything else, since a dark or flickering light says that eye has lost its partner. Low sun into a west-facing opening can do it as well. What should never happen is a force setting cranked up to overpower the fault, because that removes the protection and hides a mechanical problem in the door.
Residential operators are built to 16 CFR part 1211, and the detail is worth knowing. For a downward moving door, the operator has to begin reversal within two seconds of meeting an obstruction, then take the door back to the full upmost position. That obligation is relieved only for the first foot of travel from fully open. The compliance test is deliberately unglamorous: a one-inch object placed on the floor beneath the door edge, in line with the driving point, with the operator exerting at least a twenty-five pound pull. The rule also allows a design where a control has to be held down continuously for the door to close. If your unit behaves that way, it is not broken.
The same regulation says the manual detachment means must be capable of adjustment to six feet above the garage floor when the operator is installed per its instructions. That number exists so an adult can reach the release without a ladder in the dark. It is worth finding yours now rather than during an event. Pull it only with the door fully closed. Pulling a release while a door is mid-travel removes the operator from a load the springs may not be balancing, and the door can drop.
PG&E runs public safety power shutoffs during dangerous fire weather, which means an electric opener in Contra Costa County has a foreseeable number of days each autumn when it does nothing at all. State law caught up with that. California requires a residential automatic garage door opener sold or installed here on or after July 1, 2019 to include a battery backup function. That function has to operate during an electrical outage and keep the opener running without interruption while the power is off. The follow-on clause surprises people: a replacement residential door may not be connected to an existing opener that fails that requirement, whatever year the opener was built.
Watch the rail while somebody presses the button. Chain or belt traveling with a motionless door means the carriage has parted from the trolley, usually because the release cord was pulled or snagged and never relatched. On many units that is a two-minute fix with no parts. A hum with a dead chain is different, and so is a grinding rattle inside the head, which on aging chain drives typically means the nylon drive gear has rounded off its teeth. That is a component, not grounds for a new unit. After any manual operation, the first powered cycle should be watched to confirm the reversal still works.
Openers here fail in a pattern set by the local season rather than by cold. Months without meaningful rain leave a fine mineral dust on everything, and offshore wind events drive it under the bottom seal and onto sensor lenses and lens housings. Weather Service records from the October 2019 offshore event show a peak gust of sixty-three miles per hour at Las Trampas, which is the ridge on this town's western edge. Grit at the threshold also props the bottom seal open, which matters twice: the eyes stop reading cleanly, and the gap becomes the ember path CAL FIRE specifically flags on garage doors.
A head with no photo eyes at all belongs in a dumpster rather than on a bench, and so does one with a cracked housing or a control board nobody stocks. Most other faults are component work. Where a replacement adds or alters a circuit, the Town charges an electrical sub-permit as a percentage of the building permit fee, so anyone quoting new wiring should be able to say who files it. The answer you want at the end of a visit is a named fault, a part, and an honest read on whether spending it makes sense for a unit of that age.
Garage Door Opener Repair in Danville. Call (925) 230-5528 and a technician is dispatched with the parts on the truck. You get the price before the work starts.
Call (925) 230-5528Danville identifies its undeveloped and open-space edges, including grassland and oak woodland, as Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone areas. CAL FIRE says garage-door gaps and missing gasketing can allow ember intrusion.
Why it matters: A service visit should include a look at damaged bottom and side seals, warped panels, and visible gaps. A routine repair does not automatically trigger a code project, but a garage near open space has a concrete reason to keep its exterior seals intact and to ask the Town about requirements for a larger replacement.

Danville’s Design Review Board evaluates proposed site design and architecture for consistency with Town standards, and its submittal requirements call for exterior doors, materials, and colors to be identified on plans.
Why it matters: A simple repair is different from a larger exterior project. When a new door changes the facade, accompanies new construction, or is part of a hillside or ridgeline project, the homeowner should check address-specific Town planning requirements before ordering. The technician still measures the opening and hardware at the property so the door fits.

Town planning materials state that nearly 50 percent of Danville is located on hillsides, including the Las Trampas Ridge area and the hills paralleling Sycamore Valley.
Why it matters: Steep driveways, narrow approaches, and hillside garages change the practical setup for a repair visit: safe truck placement, access to the opening, and how an out-of-service door is secured. Mentioning those conditions before dispatch helps the technician plan the visit without guessing.
